We Haven’t Really Got It All Figured Out

Long time no blog. Huh. Life’s like that. I’m pretty bad at this sort of thing. But I’ve been quite challenged lately about the whole area of writing and creativity and the like, and so here we go again.

I realised something the other day. We think we’ve got it all figured out. We think we’ve sussed it. We get the good job, the good car, the good wife, the good family and the good church, and we think that’s it. Sorted.

There’s nothing wrong with those things per se. Don’t get me wrong – they’re all important. But they’re not it. They’re not the thing that matters.

Surrendering to God is probably the hardest thing we can do. Letting go completely, giving everything over to God is a painful thing. As Chris Martin said, ‘nobody said it was easy, nobody said it would be this hard’ And it’s not easy, which is why we don’t do it. We can’t face the thought of handing it all over, of letting it all go, as it means we’re not in control.

We love control. We love power. We love being in charge.

But God wants us to surrender our control. Give it to Him. Put Him in charge. Let Him live through us.

If we do, we’ll get caught up in His love and His grace, and have a relationship that is beyond words or pictures. If we don’t…well…we’ll just keep plodding along with that nagging feeling at the back of our minds that something is missing.

What’s missing? Our surrender. Will you?
