Wind

Wind is quite a varied dimension of weather. In some circumstances, it can be gentle and refreshing. On a hot summers day, a gentle breeze can provide timely refreshment from the searing heat of the day. In the winter months, however, a gust of wind can cut right to the core, can catch our breath and can knock us for six.

I think wind is my favourite type of weather. I love standing outside when it’s really windy, feeling the gusts buffering my body and breathing it in. I also love watching what wind does to other things, such as trees and water. I love watching trees bend in the wind, and I love watching a storm swell up the sea and create amazing displays out of the water.

Wind is powerful. It can destroy, ruin and cause havoc amongst the things of this world. The timely reminder yesterday of Hurricane Katrina five years ago is a testament to the fact that wind can be brutal.

One of the stories I love most about Jesus is when he calms the storm (see Matthew 8:23-27). The disciples can’t believe it – ‘Even the wind and the waves obey him!’ they cry out in disbelief. They can’t understand how Jesus can control the wind, the most dangerous and uncontrollable of the elements.

But that’s what I love about Jesus. He’s bigger than all the things of the earth. No storm is too much for Him, no wind too strong, no valley too deep or no mountain too high.

I love the Scripture in Romans 8:31 that says, ‘If God is for us, who can be against us?’ because it is so true. Our God can stop the wind, can raise life from the dead, can heal and can defeat the enemy forever. And God is for us. So nothing can be against us.

I like to remember this whenever I feel wind. I like to know that, no matter how strong the wind is, God is infinitely stronger.
